Build rabbit enclosure yourself

This is how

Your rabbit should be comfortable. Of course, you can use enclosures from the trade. With a little skill and time, however, you can build your pelt nose an individual enclosure with all the trimmings. The self-built enclosure is flexible and there are no limits to your imagination.

What materials are needed?

Basically, you can buy the necessary materials in the hardware store at reasonable prices. Depending on how large the rabbit enclosure will be, you need to buy appropriate wooden boards. These should already be sanded, so that your pelt-nose does not hurt itself. With these wooden panels you can provide the important privacy screen in the enclosure.

With posts you stake out the size of the enclosure. These should be anchored in the ground so that they ensure sufficient stability. Place the posts in such a way that they represent the ground plan of the enclosure.

The diameter of the rabbit wire mesh should be chosen to provide protection from the outside. Attach the wire gradually to the posts and fix it with screws and nails. You should bend the wire about 10 centimeters inwards on the inside of the enclosure, thus providing protection from digging. To ensure that the wire is strong enough, you should also attach it to the underside of the posts.

So that you can enter the enclosure unhindered, you must not forget the door. This can be bought ready-made at the hardware store and only needs to be hinged to the posts.

Your rabbit should be protected from dangers from above when outside. That is why the roof frame is important. With the help of roof panels you can protect your rabbit from weather conditions such as rain and sunlight. However, some parts of the roof framework should be covered with tightly woven wire to provide good ventilation and sunlight. Your rabbit should be able to sunbathe and retreat if the sun is too strong.

With wooden boards and small posts you can enlarge the enclosure by adding several levels. This way, your rabbit can not only walk on the ground, but also retreat to other protected levels.

What should you consider?

Before you start buying the materials, you should determine the size of the enclosure. For two rabbits you should calculate a floor space of about six square meters. For each additional rabbit, please increase the size of the enclosure by another two square meters.

Please use only wood when building the enclosure. Plastic will be chewed on by your rabbit in most cases, which can lead to health problems. Wood glue is also gnawed on by rabbits. The disadvantage of plastic enclosures is also the circulation. This is reduced, which can lead to high humidity in the enclosure.

You will certainly apply a protective coating to the wood. Please use only non-toxic products that are also used for children’s toys.
